What I’m Reading

I’ve always got multiple books going. Typically a suspense, a chic lit type book, a devotion and ……….I think that covers it. If a book is REALLY good then I can devour it in a day or two. I will devote any and every extra second I’ve got to it. Then I go through withdrawals and for many books afterwards, nothing compares to said book.

I have spent this pass year reading as diligently as I could, Jesus Calling.

Well, lately I’ve just had an urge to get into something that deals with overeating and how to approach it with God in mind.  I found this…………

1 Corinthians 10:23 NIV “I have the right to do anything,” you say–but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”–but not everything is constructive.

It goes on to say……

She also has another book that goes with it ………

So far it has been a thought provoker. A person can lose weight but we have to rehardwire how we think. The foundation can be all cracked up and busted and if we just put new flooring over it to cover it up without fixing it then eventually the busted foundation will start to prove problems again. Weight loss is the same way. You gotta change your mind (not just make up your mind) or eventually old ways and habits will resurface and take over.

What are you reading? How do you renew your mind?

Cheers!

This recipe is for one mugful of hot cocoa.

2 tsp. sugar

2 tsp. cocoa

milk

Stir together sugar and cocoa. Add a splash of milk. Mix with cocoa mixture to form a paste (doesn’t seem important, I know, but it makes a BIG difference). Fill the rest of your mug up with milk and mix well. Microwave for 2-3 minutes

Seeking: Motivation

Before I go any further I have to do this…………

hello december

I kind of like saying hello to a new month and I obviously have not took the time to do that! Can you believe we only have 21 days till Christmas?!!?!?

home alone

My shopping list is small and I haven’t put up my tree yet. Or decorated the house. Or sent out a Christmas card. I still have 21 days right?

I don’t know where my head has been but Since Thanksgiving time has flown by! I’ve had to motivate myself to get things done. It’s not a lack of wanting to do them it’s more of a procrastination thing. There’s always tomorrow, right?

ZIG ZIGLAR

If you been by my Facebook page you’ll notice an increase in motivation posters, it’s because we all need it. We have to constantly motivate and refresh ourselves on why we do what we do. I do what I do because I owe it to my health and I enjoy it. However, as a working adult life does tend to take over. Work, community activities, holidays, family life, etc…..that list could go on and on. It’s up to me (and me alone) to put myself in an environment that’s positive and motivating. Even if it’s subscribing to positive Facebook pages, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest,  friends, family (yes there are positives and negatives, you can pick). What you read, see and hear. It’s like I always tell my 9 year old SaSa (family friend) “be careful what you see because you can’t unsee it.” That’s true for a lot of things.

I even take time to sit down with my Bible for quiet time. I have to carve out that time because I need to stay connected and grounded when the world gets hectic. It is so SO important. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays but taking time to be still and be quiet makes a huge impact on your life. For me, sitting down to read, meditate/marinate on the Word reminds me that there’s so much more than all of this. Kind of like don’t sweat the small stuff.

So as these next hectic couple of weeks come and go you may see more motivational type material around me. If so, I’m doing it for both of us. Enjoy this time of year. Make plans, dream, wish and hope and enjoy it. End the end, that’s what it’s all about.

Cheers!

The Weekend

Here is a brief recap of my weekend run.

This weekend I logged in 11 miles on the Longleaf Trace.  Weather was chilly but not too cold. The first half was hard. I felt every stiff muscle, every twinge and was very tired at first. The first mile I kept thinking if I go back and go home no one will ever know any different. I would know. It’s my conscience. I would know and eventually my running would tell on me.

Anyways, I ran alone as I do 99.9% of the time. I like it that way.  I can’t compare myself to others, constantly analyzing and picking my own run apart. Maybe one day I’ll be able to run with others again but for now I’m very happy with my set up.  I run at the pace I prefer and I can get in my workout without feeling pressure to do someone else’s. With that being said I am left with the task of challenging myself. It’s way too easy to just coast through a workout and not push or challenge myself.

So as I was saying, the first half was slow and difficult. I felt everything and I was moving at a snails pace. I realize fast and slow are relative but for me it was slow. Slower than I prefer. So when I got to the turn around point, I stretched out and decided that it was time to shake it all off. I had devised a plan that on my long runs (not all) I would do surges for the last three miles to get my body use to having to push its self through the fatigue. I have to say, it went really well. It was hard and I wanted to quit but I didn’t. I had a plan and I was sticking to it.

When it was all said and done I felt like I still had a little gas in the tank but I was tired at the same time. That was a proper finish. Not too much but not too little. I ran purposefully.

I ran 11 miles and averaged 13:08 per mile. So slow. My pride would prefer something a little smaller but I’ll take what the body will give.

Today (Sunday) I did a 3 mile recovery run to shake out the stiffness and soreness. It felt good. The first mile I always have doubts. I learned a long time ago to give every run at least 2 miles. After mile 2 if I’m just absolutely miserable then I can go home. That’s only happened a handful of times.  The first mile is always the hardest.

This coming week I have a 5 mile Hobble and Gobble race on Thursday and then a 13 mile run on Saturday. At first was going to race a half marathon on Saturday to use it as measuring tool. I’m still not sure on that one. We’ll see. I know, I should have decided already but I haven’t. I know I should. We’ll see.

I’m off to bed. Early morning of Yasso 800’s.  I’m a girl on a mission!

Till next time…….Cheers!

Friday Five: 5 Favorite Fall Foods / Recipes

Hello Friday! Oh how I love you! Not as much as Sunday, but I do love you!

its_fall_yall_red-277x300

Okay, so this week has been so hectic. This begins my busy season at work when people are trying to finish their houses before Christmas so between work and personal stuff I’m just running. Seriously, that THE only extra thing I’ve had time for. This, RIGHT HERE, I’m having to force early morning hours because I hate to miss the social interaction I get with other bloggers. It’s like skipping drinks with the girls and missing what’s going on in everyone’s life. Sometimes you just have to stop and carve out time.

november

So with that being said, Thanks to DC Trifecta Bloggers (Courtney from Eat Pray Run DC, Mar from Mar on the Run, and Cynthia from You Signed Up For What?!) for hosting the weekly Friday Five Link Up and this week they’re asking for favorite fall foods.

I like food!

I like fall!

So let’s talk turkey!! (all puns intended)

1. I love turkey!! I love turkey sandwiches on crescent rolls with cranberry sauce!

2.I love cranberry sauce! Seriously, I eat it year round! Yumzzzz!

3.I love pie! Apple pie, pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie, pecan pie, meringue pie, key lime pie (that’s more summer but it’s still pie!)

4. Hot cocoa!  I love it!  The first cool snap and I got a cup made and sitting by an outdoor fire.

5. Dumplings. I’m from the south and you don’t show up to a family function and there be no dumplings. It’s just not normal!!

Normal Thanksgiving

It’s suppose to be warmer and a little dryer this weekend so I’m set to do 11 or 12 miles. Not sure, I really need to check that!  So are you guys ready for Thanksgiving! I am!! One 5 mile Hobble and Gobble run and then off to the family I go to start the festivities.   Can’t wait!!

Cheers!

Friday Five: Five Cold Weather Running Tips

Thanks to DC Trifecta Bloggers (Courtney from Eat Pray Run DC, Mar from Mar on the Run, and Cynthia from You Signed Up For What?!) for hosting the weekly Friday Five Link Up and this week they’re asking for cold weather running tips.

Now……………here’s the problem. I’m not a cold weather gal. I once had Christmas in Hawaii and I’m pretty sure that was my kind of weather!  I was okay with swimsuits and Christmas music around the pool! Just sayin!

Frozen-Olaf-warm-hugs

1. Anyways, so this week I came across this chart. I think it’s pretty appropriate….

winter workout layring guide

2.Cover your head and hands.  It sounds logical but sometimes people just want warm ears and they forgo covering the good ole’ noggin.  Heat is released here so hold in the heat and your chances of staying warm are much greater

staying-warm-winter

3. Start your run with the wind at your back.  That way when you’re heading back in and tired the wind won’t cause you to work as hard.

running-in-cold-weather

4. Change clothes quickly as possible after a cold run. You’re sweaty and your just holding that coldness close to those worn out muscles. Get some comfy warms clothes on. You’ve worked hard enough you deserve it at this point!

Warm-Cozy-FirePlace-by-Fireplace-Gif-from-DianaJennifere-on-Tumblr

5. You still have to hydrate. It make be cold out but your still sweating just probably not at the rate of summer time runs.  Don’t think you can go without still hydrate.

Winter Hydration Tips

So there you have it. Bundle up and keep moving.

I'm stuck A Christmas Story

Just Keep Going

energizer-bunny

I’ve been running since 1999. The day I started running I also ran my first 5k.  My first thought was “Sure” and then “What’s a 5k?” I did it and here we are 15 years later. There was a time I could squeak out a 8  minute mile but I’ve let my times creep up to slower paces. Why?

I let my head get in the way. I started thinking and becoming concerned about what everyone else was doing or thinking. I started coming up with  A LOT of excuses as to why I couldn’t and why I shouldn’t. All I can think is…………………

Who is this mental headcase runner I’ve become?

It was all put to the test this last weekend. I ran 10 miles Saturday……on the treadmill. Why? It was a gorgeous day outside, a little chilly but I was having a serious headcase day. I didn’t want to run on the beaten path. I didn’t want to be seen hobbling along while my peers were zipping by. My pride was hollering and throwing the worst temper tantrum but here’s the deal, if I didn’t run that 10 miles, there was no marathon in January. I had to treat myself like a 8 year old who insisted on having it they’re way while the adult in me knew what needed to be done. Saturday was rough.

If I didn’t run the 10 miles there was no marathon. It was a make it or break it workout for me.
I love running. I really do. I just am my own worse critic. I did the 10 long miles on a treadmill. I don’t know what it was that got me through but I know this, that day and that space was my comfort zone and it got me through it. I did it.
Sunday I did a 3 mile recovery run. Recovery runs are great because typically if your really stiff after a long run, it helps lessen the stiffness. There’s lots of other scientific mubo jumbo that it’s good for but that’s the jest of it. The first mile hurts and is uninspiring but close to the end of mile 2 and into mile 3 it’s like your new again. Typically.
Monday I rested. My hips were tired, fatigued and on the verge of being useless other than holding me up, even that was debatable.
Today, Tuesday, I did a Fartlek workout. It ended up being close to 5 miles. And again, my head was hollering NO but the runner in me knew this was an important workout. Not just physically but mentally. It was another workout to tell myself, “You’ve been running for 15 years you can do this. Stop saying you can’t because you can.” I wanted to stop a thousand times. I wanted to say ” No I’m on the verge of having stomach issues” (that part was true) but if I stopped and continued on with my day, I can’t go back and say I finished. It’s done. I would have known that I LET myself short change my workout. What’s the point?
I am a runner. I may not be fast (although that is a relative term but compared to most of my local peers, I’m not fast) but I can persevere.  I’m like the energizer bunny, I can keep going and going.  I love all things running but I’ve got to leave the headcase runner at home. I’m better than that. Most people to look at me would not know that I have more than my fair share of 5k, 10ks and half marathon under my belt. I lost track of triathlons. And a 7x marathon finisher. That’s me. That’s who I am. So no more headcase running Brandy. I’m better than that.

Be proud.  Be confident. Be strong. Be a runner.
Till next time……….

Another Long Run

running

10 miles. That’s the long for the day. I ran 10…………long………..slow miles. Several times I just wanted to be done. It was brutal mentally. Physically I was fine but mentally I was struggling.  But here’s the point………I did it. I finished it.  Several times I kept thinking “If I go back now I can be done” but I kept hearing my friend Pam say “won ‘t you regret it?” She wasn’t with me physically but I can totally hear her saying it and well, she would have been right. Ugh. So I ran. Blah.

running

The best part of a long run……..the post run nap!  Warm shower, warm clothes…….long nap.  It’s my fav

sleeping

Today I saw this quote……….

“No matter how fast you are, it all comes down to commitment, hard work perseverance and passion. If you have those things and have the courage to test yourself from time to time, you never know how things might turn out or whom you might inspire.” — Meb Keflezighi

I have to say, at the end of the day, no matter what quality the run was, I’m just grateful I can run.

So till next time…………

Cheers!

Friday Five: 5 Ways to Stay Healthy During Holidays

santascoming

Let’s put the rest of 2014 in perspective………………..Christmas is 7 Monday’s away!

buddytheelf

I get excited about the holidays!  I love seeing my family and the traditions and the cooler weather.  I love the holidays!

holidays

Surprisingly my diet and habits are a little better this time of year because of all the treats and desserts and rich beverages I tend to be a little more mindful of what I’m eating and doing. You have to be or it will snowball on you in a hurry!

buudy-the-elf-snowballs-o

So here are my tips for staying healthy during the holidays……….

1. Log it!  Log every morsel you take in.  You can use a notebook or you can use an app such as MyFitnesspal.  The more you know………………..the less you grow. (see what I did there!)

MyFitnessPalScoop

2. You got to move it!  Seriously dancing on the office table doesn’t count. Log in those miles or do those burpees but stay active and MAKE TIME FOR IT!!  No workout………………..no party.

GIF-Dancing-classic-dance-funny-me-twerk-GIF

3.  Don’t deny but don’t gorge yourself. Yes there will be pumpkin pie, or oreos dipped in something or even cream cheese something at the parties. Taste. Nibble but don’t act like it’s your last meal!  Your there to socialize and have fun. Not increase pants size!!

unnamed

4. Water. Drink it often and drink lots of it. Make water your friend.  Water in water out. Besides the more water you drink (notice I said the more water you drink, I was specific.  I know you guys, drinking hot toddy’s do not count here. I know you too well!) the less likely you’ll overindulge in other areas.

Faucet Face

5. Set a goal. Whether it’s saying I won’t gain weight this holiday season  or it’s my goal to lose 5 pounds this season. You could even sign up for a race or engage your office in a friendly diet bet.  Anything to help keep you accountable.

As always thanks for stopping by!

I Want To Run All The Races

starting-line

Okay I must admit, I don’t feel prepared to run 26.2 miles in less than 12 weeks. Which for me is a little disappointing already because I really wanted  the Rock and Roll New Orleans Marathon to be a PR for me.  It’s flat, the weather should be appropriate and I’ve been registered for it since June. But at this point I don’t foresee a PR, I just see some great miles ahead of me!

Now, with that being said I suddenly have the marathon bug stirring around in me to the point where I’m all like “ohh let’s do this race and the next day I can do this race and 3 weeks later I can do this race!” Can I get an Amen to the fact that I have attention problem with races?! Just 2 weeks ago I was ready to just bow out and do a half!  Seriously, I have problems.

I want more

So I’ve decided to compose a list we’ll dub…………

I Want To Run All The Races

1. Rock and Roll New Orleans Marathon; January 25, 2015

2.  Mississippi Blues Marathon; January 10, 2015

3.  First Light Marathon;, January 11, 2015

4.  Hobble Then Gobble 5 Mile Run November 27, 2014

5.  Mississppi Coast Half Marathon November 29, 2014

6.  Raccoon Mountain Marathon March 21, 2015

It’s just 6 races.  That’s not asking for too much!  I just need a second job to pay for race fees and travel and I’m totally sure my body will hold up to the abuse challenge.
